About Us

We are two friends who love learning about health, trying out what we learn, and sharing the info with anyone who will listen.

We are not your typical experts, in fact we are not experts. What we are are two guys—an emergency room doctor, and a dad/firefighter— who enjoy wading through the murky waters of the health world, and providing you with the most important, actionable, and user friendly information possible so we can all try and lead healthier lives. If you want to learn a little more about us, please check out what we have to say below.

Nick Fortino

My love of the outdoors and community started from a young age in a small northern Ontario town. My tendency to never stray far from lakes, woods, campfires, family, and friends led to an interest in hearing people’s stories about life and the human condition. Mix this with a fascination for health and biology, some luck, a love of rock and roll, and eventually you end up with a career in emergency medicine.

In my down time from the fast-paced excitement of the emergency department, as I travelled, cooked, read, played music, sports, fished, hiked, and generally enjoyed myself around this beauty of a globe, the question of what it means to be healthy was a constant conversation topic. One thing that became apparent is this; despite doing an impressive job keeping up with modern healthcare demands, the average health of our society seems to be heading the wrong way.

Through many conversations with Connor over the years discussing this exact question, the answers always seemed to be made more complicated than they needed. After trying to simplify things for ourselves we wanted to share what we learned in a way that allowed people to continue doing what makes them individuals, and what they love to do, while still bettering their health.

The main desire to invite others on our journey is simply because it is more enjoyable doing things with a community. Also, being healthier is one of the best ways to be happier. In a world with enough hardship, there can never be too many happy people doing what they love.

As a dad to two amazing young boys, working as a firefighter and a small business owner, my wife—the keystone of my life—and I, are quite possibly in the busiest stage of our lives. This has led me to seek clarity and simplicity in our life. The more I learned about health, the more I realized that clarity and simplicity are exactly what the health space needs as well.

Becoming a dad changed the way I look at life. When we had our first son, I asked myself so many questions: What do we feed this little guy? What is the best environment to raise him in? How do I ensure I will always be able to keep up with him and any future grandchildren? My busy stage of life caused me to streamline what and how I learn. Nick and I would chat about health often, and over the years we have tried out health tips that are quick, agreed upon by the experts, and based on how the body is supposed to function.

Being a firefighter gives me a unique perspective on health because I have chosen a career that has its own health risks. I have come to recognize the importance of focusing on the aspects of my health that I can control, which as we are learning, are many. As an owner of a small window cleaning business, I have learned how to become a writer. Just joking. But seriously, I have learned how to try new things, face new challenges, and create the life we want for our family.

Nick and I have moved along our health paths together, reading, learning, and trying everything out together. We quickly realized that not only do we love learning new ideas, but we love sharing what we learn with anyone who wants to listen. So here Nick and I are, two guys with different journeys, but sharing the same vision, and taking on a new challenge together.
